Kavisigamuwa Launch

Kavisigamuwa is widely considered the premier thermal soaring site in the North Western Province. Located on the slopes of Bollagala Mountain, this site is a playground for pilots who enjoy working “the house thermal” to gain significant altitude over the Kurunegala plains.

Site Overview

Managed in coordination with the Avion Farm Retreat, the launch provides a stunning 360-degree view of the surrounding coconut estates and distant peaks like Athugala (Elephant Rock). While the launch itself is at a modest 391m, the thermal triggers here are powerful, often allowing pilots to climb well above the takeoff point.

Safety Rules

  • Experience Required: Due to the strong thermal activity and tight landing windows, a valid P3 rating (or P2 with instructor supervision) is mandatory.
  • Weather Hazards: Strictly no flying during active rain or if cumulonimbus (Cb) clouds are developing nearby. The site is prone to quick overdevelopment in the afternoons.
  • Power Lines: Be extremely mindful of the high-tension wires located approximately 2km South of the primary Landing Zone (LZ). Maintain a safe glide ratio when heading downwind.

Flight Conditions

  • Wind: The site works best with a steady North West or West breeze.
  • The “House Thermal”: Look for the rocky outcrops just in front of the launch; they act as a consistent trigger point for lift.
  • Access: The trek to the launch is steep. It is accessible by 4x4 vehicles only, or a vigorous 20-minute hike through the plantation.

Local Hospitality

The Avion Farm Retreat serves as the unofficial “base camp” for the flying community here. It’s the perfect place to pack your wing, grab a cold ginger beer, and talk shop with other pilots after a long session in the air.
