Delthota Launch
Perched high above the lush tea plantations of the Central Highlands, the Delthota launch offers one of the most scenic flight paths in Sri Lanka. This site is famous for its strong thermic activity and reliable ridge soaring potential, making it a favorite for experienced pilots looking for extended airtime.
Site Overview
The launch is located at approximately 1,400m above sea level. It provides a breathtaking vantage point overlooking the Loolkandura Estate—the birthplace of Ceylon Tea. On clear days, you can soar alongside the mist-covered peaks with a panoramic view of the Kandy plateau.
Flying Conditions
- Thermal Magic: The site generates powerful morning thermals. It is highly recommended to launch before midday to avoid the overdevelopment of clouds and stronger afternoon gusts.
- Wind Sensitivity: While typically flown with South East or North East winds, the bowl shape of the valley can create venturi effects. Always check the local cycle before committing to a reverse launch.
- Landing Zones: There are several flat landing areas near the Ravangama Temple and surrounding estate roads, though they require precision due to the sloping terrain and nearby trees.
Local Highlights
When you aren’t in the air, the area is rich with history. You can visit the ruins of James Taylor’s cottage or explore the Nillamba Meditation Center. The local community is very welcoming to pilots, and the nearby “Windloft Retreat” is a common spot for flyers to regroup.
