Avion Farm Retreat Kantale (Training Center)
This is the primary training facility for the association, specifically designed for beginner pilots and students. Unlike the mountain sites, flight here is initiated via a stationary or mobile Towing Machine, allowing for safe, gradual altitude gain in a controlled environment.
Student & Beginner Focus
Kantale’s flat, expansive geography makes it the ideal “classroom” for paragliding. The absence of mountain rotors and valley winds allows students to focus entirely on their wing control, launch posture, and landing flare without the complexity of alpine terrain.
Site Features
- Towing Operations: The site utilizes a high-spec winch system. The “runway” allows for tow lines exceeding 1km, which can safely loft a student to 300m–500m AGL (Above Ground Level).
- Wide Open Landing Zone (LZ): The surrounding fields are vast and free of obstacles, providing a massive safety margin for students practicing their first solo landings.
- Controlled Environment: Instructors can maintain constant radio contact and use the tow tension to assist the pilot’s climb.
Safety Rules & Regulations
- Training Only: Solo flying for students is strictly under the supervision of association instructors.
- No High-Wind Towing: Operations cease if surface winds exceed 20km/h to ensure student safety during the tow phase.
- Airspace Awareness: Pilots must remain within the designated training box to avoid interference with any low-flying local traffic.
- Power Lines: While the LZ is massive, be aware of the high-tension lines located 2km South. Students are taught to turn away from these early in the flight.
Getting There
The training center is based at the Avion Farm Retreat in Sooriyapura, Kantale.
- Access: Easily accessible by all vehicle types.
- Facilities: The retreat provides shaded packing areas, theory classrooms, and refreshments for students and visiting pilots.
