18 Bends Launch
Named after the iconic 18 hairpin turns on the Kandy-Mahiyangana highway, this launch offers one of the most dramatic “gateways” to the Knuckles Mountain Range. Flying here feels like stepping off the edge of the world into the vast Mahaweli valley below.
📍 Site Overview
The launch point is situated near the top of the pass, providing a massive vertical drop. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Soranathota plains and the Mahiyangana Stupa in the distance. It is a premier site for catching early morning “glass-off” conditions.
🌬️ Flying Conditions
1. Thermal Activity
As the sun hits the eastern face of the hills, the thermals trigger early and can be quite punchy. It is best flown in the morning before the valley heat becomes too intense.
2. The Wind Gap (Venturi Effect)
Because this is a mountain pass, the wind can funnel through the gap.
- Threshold: If wind speed exceeds 15km/h at launch, expect significant turbulence.
- Risk: Avoid flying if the wind shifts directly North, as the rotor from the Knuckles range becomes dangerous.
3. Landing Zone (LZ)
There are very few “easy” landings. Pilots usually aim for:
- Flat patches near the base of the mountain.
- The riverbank (advanced glide ratio required).
- Note: Always perform a site briefing before attempting these landings.
⚠️ Safety Notes
CRITICAL WARNING: This is not a student site. The lack of easy emergency landing fields and the potential for strong rotor winds behind the ridges make this strictly a P3 / Advanced location only.
🚗 Access & Logistics
The launch is easily accessible directly from the main A5 highway. There is a small viewing area where you can prep your gear, but be mindful of the passing traffic and curious tourists!
Pilot Tradition: After your flight, grab a “Pol Rotti” and ginger tea from one of the many roadside stalls along the 18 bends—it’s the unofficial way to end a flying day here.
